charlie's law
family crashed in thasus and a child was the only survivor.
charles evans 14 years alone in that planet and in the story he is 17 years old. he is rescued by antares and transferred to the enterprise.
he can make things disappear and create things from nowhere (one scene has him create a flower to give to a yeoman).
it is later revealed that the thasians gave him those abilities so that he would survive in the planet. but that makes him not fit to live with anyone anywhere. the thasians are the only ones who can control him. according to them, charles would always use his abilities to his advantage.
"he would destroy you and your kind or you'd be force to destroy him to save yourselves."
charles cries out in the end that he doesn’t want to go with the thasians. he can’t even touch them.
dagger of the mind
dr. simon van gelder goes aboard the enterprise incoherent and manic, insisting that he isn’t a runaway prisoner from the tantalus penal colony and he is also accusing dr. tristan adams of things. the enterprise thinks that was concerning, decides to go down to the planet (tantalus v) to conduct an investigation. captain kirk is accompanied by helen noel, a psychiatrist.
they meet dr. adams (and lethe who was subjected to the potentiator, successfully rehabilitated, and is now working as a therapist.) dr. adams says dr. van gelder tried to use the neural potentiator on himself without supervision hence his current condition. in the end though it is revealed that dr. adams really did do something to dr. van gelder.
the neural potentiator/neutralizer empties the mind and someone fills it with suggestions. basically mind control. anything said to someone when the mind is empty becomes their thoughts.
"...if they're unbearable (memories) why carry them at all? sufficient unto the day are the burdens thereof."
when captain kirk escapes, he stuns dr. adams and he falls onto the table unconscious. more things happen, spock turns on the power or something which activates the potentiator. dr. adams is exposed with no one to fill his mind with suggestions. it is thoroughly emptied. he is exposed for too long so he dies.
"he died of loneliness."
