essun, hoa, tonkee arrive in castrima. also they aren’t allowed to leave so…
chapter 19
past. back in meov.
innon, syen, and alabaster are in relationship with each other. also one pirate mentions to syen that if she doesn’t give them an orogene child, they’ll steal one from the mainland so…
(in their defense, they need to secure the next generation of orogenes to help stabilize the island or smth so yea)
chapter 20
still in meov. still in the past but like 2 years later.
syen and alabaster had a child. corundum. (meaning very hard mineral, hardness only second to diamond apparently.)
child-rearing got her too restless, she now wants to join the pirates sailing the seas
her first trip with the pirates went without any hitch. she decides she wants to see allia
allia is still burning from whatever the obelisk did a few years ago. syen decides to ice the whole area. (which is stupid tbh she’s supposed to be hiding, hello)
end of the chapter, she thinks she saw someone wearing a burgundy uniform. a guardian.
chapter 21
tonkee is binof!
hoa is…hoa. no doubt that he is a stone eater. the thing that he has been carrying the entire time are rock fragments and that’s his food! he likes essun 🥺 he’s so precious. (i’m not sure if it was the stone eaters that form bonds with orogenes, or was it the obelisks?)
and then there’s herna (the guy who helped essun escaped back in chapter 1.) he’s been staying in castrima for some time now idk
alabaster arrives in castrima! says he wants to talk to essun erm also that he’s dying?!
final notes
the guardian obviously tracks syen, brings everyone to meov and bombed the hell out of it
alabaster disappears to the ground for some reason, stone eater antimony drags him down
innon dies why not
a guardian, who was shirtless :(, kind of implodes innon with his own orogene powers or smth. (innon is an untrained orogene.) the guardian holds innon’s head and then syen feels him die. very intense and sad
syen doesn’t want the guardians, shirtless guy and schaffa (derogatory!) to take corundum back to the fulcrum. she doesn’t want to subject her child to that life (also as a promise to alabaster that she wouldn’t let them take their child ever.) so she covers corundum’s mouth and nose and basically kills him instead :(
syen reaches to the obelisk above to kill everyone. some survived tho.
now we know that the guy who caused the season in the beginning is alabaster and he did the same as syen; he reached to the obelisk to do it’s thing.
back in castrima. alabaster is very weak, on the verge of dying. seems like his stone eater friend is eating...him? his life force? idk. his hand is a stump with bite marks…antimony! he also says he doesn’t forgive syen, now essun, for killing corundum :((((((
and then alabaster asks essun if she’s ready to do it (and by it, he means calling on the obelisk again just like last time) but this time their target is the moon?!
